A man was found dead in an apartment building in Ankeny on Wednesday afternoon, and authorities believe his 4-year-old son was in the apartment with the body for several days.
Police were called to the Colonial Apartments, 110 N.W. State St., after a man was found dead of what is believed to be natural causes, according to KCCI.com.
The father of the man confirmed to KCCI that the child had been in the apartment alone with him since he died, which was likely Sunday or Monday of this week.
Jason Smith, the apartment's landlord, told Ankeny Patch that the deceased man was Ray Calhoun, 40, a carpenter and father.
Smith said that Calhoun's father had been trying to contact his son for a couple of days without success. Calhoun's father called Smith today at about 3:15 p.m. and asked him to check on Ray.
When Smith knocked on the door of Calhoun's apartment, his young son answered and let him in.
"Dad is sleeping," the child told Smith, who found Calhoun had died in his bed.
"It's a bad day," Smith said of the death. "He was a great tenant and I think the world of him. He will be missed."
Sgt. David DuVal of the Ankeny Police Department told the Des Moines Register Calhoun's son is staying with family members. “The child is fine,” DuVal said.
KCCI reports this morning that the boy is in the care of his mother.
DuVal said a cause of death has not been determined.
Calhoun had rented an apartment at the complex for three years.
