Ankeny Brings Home Class 4A State Baseball Title

After defeating Fort Dodge, the Hawks baseball team nabbed its first title since 1992.

It would be hard to argue that July was a good month for Ankeny athletics.

On Saturday night, the top-ranked Ankeny Hawks baseball team defeated Fort Dodge, 10-0, to bring home the Class 4A state baseball championship, according to scores reported by the Des Moines Register. The Hawks join the girls softball team, which also recently brought home the first Class 5A title.

Ankeny became the sixth school in state history to win a title in softball and baseball during the same year, the Register reported. The Hawks finished the season with 43 victories.

The championship game ended by mercy rule in the sixth inning.

Two weeks ago, the Hawkettes defeated Des Moines East High School 2-0 to win the title. It was a parting gift to exiting head coach Amy Farmer, who will leave the district for an assistant principal position with Burlington Schools.

Glad to see our sports teams competing well and the school board decided to put an end to it next year. Unreal !!! Still can't believe they decided to split the town. What a travesty!! How did those jokers get elected that ruined such a great thing.

Todd, I would think congratulations would be in order with any comments on this article. To both teams, girls and boys, in what they accomplished-no small feat. I'm well aware of how hard it was for these teams to accomplish what they did, and congratulations to them-well-deserved! Your comment, well, it just reminds me of another city, whose voters chose another path years ago. They decided sports was truly king, and their legacy of that was most important. At least Ankeny was brave, in realizing changes were needed-growth-wise, opportunity-wise, academically-wise, while maybe hindering that sports legacy some in splitting for awhile. At least you and yours-your fears- were clear-only related to sports. Well, it seems too late to go backwards now, to a 1 hs town/city?. We need to support those athletes in the next several years, those being brave-especially those kids in the next few years, when their success, or failure, will most need our support. In telling them they did not fail, perhaps? And, not just in sports, but in other activities that are also affected by this split. If you can't do that in support, as an adult, well, hate to say, Valley will appreciate any of our student numbers, as their slow-down in student growth catches up with that city.

If these championships are such a big deal to Ankeny, why did Fort Dodge have more people at the championship game?
As a Hawk baseball parent, thanks to all the great fans that did turn out and cheer the boys on.
By the way, Fort Dodge has 800+ students, Ankeny has 1600+. Why shouldn't we be able to meet in the championship in 3 years? The talent is there.
