Ankeny City Council Wrestles with How to Replace Craig Block

Ankeny City Council members could name a resident to fill the seat being vacated by Craig Block, or the public can petition the council to hold a special election to choose a replacement.

Several Ankeny City Council members Monday said they are aware that a petition is circulating among residents to call for a special election to fill an expected vacancy on the council.

The council is looking for a replacement for , who earlier this month tendered his resignation.

The council could appoint someone to temporarily served on the council until a special election is held. Once they receive a petition, officials anticipate the special election will be held in August.

Block, who wouldn’t have a say on his replacement, said Monday that the public would have more confidence in selecting an appointee who had previous experience with a public council.

“I’d support that thought,” said council member Wade Steenhoek.

Mayor Steven Van Oort said if there were no special election, the appointee would remain on the council through 2013.

Councilman Jim McKenna joked with Block that “it would be easier if you didn’t leave.”

City officials estimated the cost to hold a special election is between $12,000 and $25,000.

“The cost is what the cost is,” said Councilman Mark Holm.

The council will discuss the criteria for any special appointment and how to handle the vote at its next meeting.
