It was an Irish battle as hard fought as the Black and Tan War, though much shorter in length.
After five days of voting, one bar has triumped over all others in Patch's "Best Place to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day" contest. The victor is Mickey's Irish Pub in Waukee.
With a majority of the votes and Sully's Irish Pub in West Des Moines just 29 votes shy of the title, Mickey's Irish Pub at 50 S.E. Laurel St. in Waukee was a clear winner among all four of Patch's Irish pubs, which included Mickey Finn's and Murphy's Bar & Grill, both in Urbandale.
Owned by husband and wife team Amy and Andy Walsh, Mickey's Irish Pub serves not only as the premiere place to celebrate the biggest Irish holiday this side of Ireland, but also doubles as a great neighborhood hangout serving drinks and food seven days a week.
"We try to make Mickey's as comfortable a place as possible to come out and hang out. That's what makes Mickey's so popular," said Amy Walsh, co-owner of Mickey's Irish Pub. "I'm glad so many of our friends voted for Mickey's."
To celebrate, Mickey's Irish Pub will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a full day's worth of fun and entertainment. At 7 a.m., Mickey's will serve a breakfast buffet; at 1:30 p.m., the Iowa Scottish Bag Pipes & Drums will play; a lunch menu that includes corned beef and cabbage will be served until 3 p.m.; then, beginning at 6 p.m., live bands Throwing Toast and Rock Puppets will play until midnight.
