Obama's Iowa City Visit on Student Debt Met By Protesters

Students gathered to protest President Barack Obama's stop at the University of Iowa Field House.

Protesters gathered in Iowa City on Wednesday in advance of President Barack Obama's visit to University of Iowa campus to show their disapproval for the president and his policies.

Obama was in town rallying support for Congress to freeze the student loan interest rate before it doubles in July. Obama is due to speak at the University of Iowa Field House this afternoon.

"I am here to spread awareness that there are students on campus that don't like Barack Obama, and that it's OK to disagree with the president," said Peter Larson, 23, a UI senior from Dubuque.

University of Iowa has a reputation as having a liberal bias.

A couple dozen protesters were on hand with banners to greet the president and the 5,000-plus people who came to see him. Larson waved a sign that said, "Stop Obamunism."

Kelsey Boehm, 20, a University of Iowa junior from Peoria, IL, and president of the UI College Republicans, said that while student debt is an issue, the bigger issue is the unemployment rate among college graduates and young people in general.

It's nice to see someone exercising their right to free speech. I applaud the young man for being willing to stand up!

The turnout was pretty bleak. Iowa City knows how to throw a protest (take Obama's visit in 2010 after the health care reform bill went through). This was not a finer moment in the annals of Iowa City protest history.

But, should it be that surprising that turnout was low at an event on a college campus when the theme of the visit was freezing a student debt rate increase? There's plenty people have to be upset about, but doesn't this seem like a losing situation for a protest?

Pres. Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have yet to indict a single Wall Street crook. In fact, AG Holder's former law firm, undoubtedly the one he'll go back to, represents many of those same Wall Street crooks he should be indicting. Having said that, I'm sure as hell not voting for Romney, who squirrels away his money in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland. I'm holding my nose and voting for Obama.

Just because somebody works hard and isnt stupid with their money like most people these days, doesnt mean a thing. "squirrel away" money? Its reported to the IRS and all taxes paid--otherwise how would an ignorant person such as yourself know about it.

Ty Shamu, you need to educate yourself about Wall Street criminals. Read Charles H. Ferguson's book "Predator Nation." Also read "All the Devils Are Here: The History of the American Financial Crisis," by Beth MacLean. Until you've read one or both both of those books, preferably "Predator Nation," you won't have a clue about what Wall Street crooks have been up to. You also won't know about Attorney General Eric Holder's disgusting failure to hold any of them accountable. Not one indictment, not one, despite their fraud, working to help Mexican drug cartels and terrorists keep their money safe, etc., etc., etc.
