Native Landscaping Workshop

City of Ankeny Utility Office, 220 W 1st St, Ankeny, IA | Get Directions »
FREE

The City of Ankeny is offering a workshop called "How to Incorporate Native Plants into an Urban Landscape" with content specifically geared for local homeowners and gardeners. It will be held on Wednesday, April 4 at the Public Services Building located at 220 W. First St. from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The course is free, but reservations are requested.

Iowa's historic landscape was once dominated by tall grass prairie plants. Even though the landscape has changed, prairie plants are suited to Iowa's climate, provide immense root-structure to help infiltrate rain water and require little maintenance once established. This course will help residents gain a basic knowledge of native plants that can be easily integrated into urban landscaping.

The workshop will be presented by Jennifer Welch, an urban conservationist from Polk Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and Amy Bryant, an environmental engineer with the City of Ankeny. They will discuss the history, benefits, and their own experience with planting native plants on both public projects and their own properties. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and will receive a handout with a detailed list of recommended native plants.

For more information or to pre-register for the event, please email Amy Bryant or call 515-963-3520.
