Ankeny Event Planner: Valentine's Day, Garden Association Meeting, National Honor Society Induction and More

Here's what is going on in Ankeny the week of Feb. 13-19:

  • Need help on your income taxes this year? is offering by appointment through April 13. Individuals can call 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment. DMACC accounting students who have been certified by the Internal Revenue Service will help prepare federal and Iowa individual income tax returns for qualified residents.
  • Are your kids fans of story time at the ? If so, story time is scheduled every morning at the library. You can check out our for details on when story time is held and how you can register your kids for the fun event.
  • The will continue the first exhibit in its K-12 Art Exhibition this week with works of art by students from the School District. The exhibit will run until Feb. 28. Bondurant, North Polk, and Ankeny Schools are all participating in the exhibition. The Ankeny Art Center’s K-12 exhibits are part of the facility's extended outreach programming, intended to introduce and familiarize students with the gallery setting.
  • The at 5 p.m. at the Ankeny Library. The Teen Advisory Group meets on the third Thursday of the month is open to students in grades six through 12.  To join, students can fill out a T.A.G. application, get parental permission as well as attend and participate in T.A.G. meetings.

  • It's Monday and it's dinner time - where to go? Think about having . From 5-8 p.m., a portion of all proceeds will go to benefit the PTO.
  • Kirkendall Public Library will hold its tonight at 6:30 pm. All adults who enjoy reading young adult or juvenile literature are welcome to attend and participate in discussing their favorite titles.
  • The will hold its January meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the . This month’s speaker will be Leanna Culver from the Des Moines Botanical Center. She will speak about the history and care of coleus, a variety of plant that can thrive in the shade or sun and comes in many colors, sizes and shapes. All AGA meetings are free and open to the public.
  • Tuesday is Valentine's Day and the Student Activities Council at is helping students celebrate with a . Starting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, students can enjoy cookies and hot chocolate in the lounge of Building #5 while making a homemade card for their sweethearts.
  • The will hold its monthly at 1 p.m. Tuesday. This month's title is "The 19th Wife" by David Ebershoff. Books are available at the library and everyone is welcome to attend.
  • Parents and family members are invited Tuesday to the National Honor Society . The ceremony begins at 6:30 pm. and the school will be announcing the new members and inducting them into the Eagle chapter of the National Honor Society.
  • The is hosting a few computer classes Wednesday and Thursday of this week for adults looking to learn a few new skills. One is a , which starts at 10 a.m., and an , which starts at 2 p.m. On Thursday, adults can learn how to navigate the Internet with a basic Internet computer class, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. To register for any of these classes, call the library's adult programming department.
  • will be held Wednesday afternoon at . The program is a book group for kids in third through fifth grade. Books and a Bite starts at 3:15 p.m.
  • The is holding a at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. At the reception, new members will get to meet Chamber officials and other business members in the community.
  • On Thursday, take the little ones to Tot Time at the . Tot Time is a time set aside for kids and moms/caregivers to gather, play and get to know one another.  Tot Time is held in the library meeting room and begins at 10:15 a.m.
  • At 7 p.m. Thursday, Kirkendall Public Library will host an . This month's title is "Swamplandia!" by Karen Russell. The group is open to everyone and books are available for checkout at the library.
  • On Friday, the Ankeny boys basketball teams will travel to Waukee for both , and . The games will be played at Waukee High School, located at 555 S.E. University Ave. Ninth grade plays at 4:45 p.m. followed by 10th grade at 6:15. The varsity game begins at 7:45 p.m.
  • This weekend is your last chance to catch the   production of "Sing On!". This production is the sequel to last year’s “Play On!” and is directed by Barb Wagner. The show is described as a comedy about a musical. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, as well as a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. The show continues through Feb. 19. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and $10 for kids.
