Ankeny Patch: The Week in Review

Ben Gray, head coach at the south Ankeny , recently joined his fellow Farrell’s managers by helping to raise money for the Iowa Special Olympics. Although his fundraising deadline was Sept. 15, his story is nonetheless inspiring.

Open enrollment between schools feeding Ankeny's two high schools was discussed at Monday night’s school board meeting.

Board member Pat Cahill urged board members for input before a plan is created outlining guidelines for students who wish to transfer between schools in the district’s two-part feeder system.

A man who was trapped for roughly three hours Tuesday by corn in a grain bin at Heartland Co-op east of Ankeny was doing well following the incident.

Heartland Co-op employee Steve Kaufman, 56, of Ankeny, was transported by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. The Ankeny Fire Department was called to the scene at 9:30 a.m. The co-op is located at 4300 N.E. 94th Ave. in the unincorporated area of Enterprise, just east of Ankeny.

Tuesday night was marked with a mix of celebration for half of Ankeny's eight school board candidates and surprise, most likely, for all of them.

Ankeny residents resoundingly voted out all four Ankeny School Board members and swept into office their four opponents. Challengers Dustin Graber, Brad Huss, Stephanie Jorgensen and Mike Rooney soundly defeated incumbents Trent Murphy, Aaron Johnson, Leslie Petersen and Andrew Martin.

Ankeny police said Wednesday that a 15-year worker at the plant placed a bomb threat.

Officers have charged Desiree Brandon Dixon, 40, of Ames with making the threat. A department news release said that the Polk County Dispatch Center received the call at 7:15 a.m. reporting a bomb at the plant and telling dispatchers that people would be killed.

6) "Ankeny Dad Among Those Killed in I-80 Crash"

An Ankeny man was among two employees of a Des Mones towing company killed Tuesday evening, along with two over-the-road truck drivers, in an accident on Interstate Highway 80, reports the Des Moines Register.

Jesse Inman, 29, a husband and father of three, was an employee of Hanifen Towing in Des Moines. His funeral was held Saturday. .

7) "Beloved School Crossing Guard Dies in Ankeny Accident"

A beloved Ankeny school crossing guard, who moved to the city to be closer to his grandchildren, died on duty today doing  “exactly what he was trained to do.”

Franklyn “Frank” Luttrell, 78, was working his usual post at the corner of West First and School streets Thursday morning when, police said, he was struck by a vehicle driven by Laurin Cole of Ankeny. He died from his injuries later that day.

, and as someone who loved kids, his dog and Frank Sinatra. was created for Luttrell Thursday night and the next morning, honoring the memory of her friend. Police say it will be several days before they determine .

8) "Being Involved in the Community Comes Easy for Ankeny Banker"

Although she enjoys banker's hours, Amanda Petersen does not stop working when Ankeny's closes for the day.

During lunches and after business hours, Petersen builds business contacts by serving on the board for the Ankeny Building Association, fundraising for the United Way and Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce and participating with the Jaycees.

“It all started with (Ankeny) Young Professionals,” she said.

9) "Ankeny School Board Candidates Raised More Than $50,000"

The Ankeny school board candidates could have bought a couple brand-new cars for the amount of money raised in their election campaigns.

The campaign leading up to Tuesday’s school board election in which four newcomers ousted the four incumbents seeking re-election to the board cost the candidates more than $43,000.

10) "Ankeny Woman Wins $20,000 Lottery Prize"

An Ankeny woman won a top prize of $20,000 playing the lottery's "Tic Tac 2's" instant-scratch game.

Sue Stockbauer claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. She purchased her winning ticket at , 410 N. Ankeny Blvd., in Ankeny.
