Retailers Learn How to Spot a Fake $100 and More at Ankeny Chamber Organized Retail Crime Event

Ankeny Police will share the common tactics used to steal from Ankeny retailers at a chamber breakfast Tuesday.

Officers with the Ankeny Police Department will share common shoplifting and forgery tactics with small businesses at the Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce Breakfast meeting 9 a.m. Tuesday. Lt. Ben Bowersox said the presentation isn't in response to any recent events, but that he and other officers will provide tips on how retailers can protect themselves from criminals. One of the latest scams involves washed bills that are turned into $100 bills. The trick often evades detection since the fake bill is printed on real money and pens that retailers use would show that it is safe. Counterfeiters wash ink from the bills in a process called bleaching before printing the denomination of a larger bill onto it. Officers will explain how to spot …

UPDATE: Authorities Identify Body Found Near Polk-Story County Line

Barton Tingley, 49, of Des Moines, was identified as the deceased man found in rural Polk County on Thursday. No foul play is suspected.

  Update Authorities have identified Barton Tingley, 49, of Des Moines, as the man found in rural Polk County on Thursday, multiple news outlets report. Friends found him in a farm field at about 1:30 p.m. Foul play is not suspected, but the cause of the death is still unknown. Previous Authorities are investigating a dead body found in rural Polk County, KCCI reports. The TV station cites a spokeswoman for the Polk County Sheriff's Department saying the department is in the middle of its investigation of the man's body, which was found by a friend. Trial Postponed for Ankeny Parents Accused of Locking Their Adopted Children in a Basement

The trial of Paul and JoAnn Drake was pushed back after plea negotiations failed to move as quickly as planned, the Des Moines Register reports.

The trial for an Ankeny couple accused of locking their two adopted children in a basement for days at a time has been postponed, according to the Des Moines Register. The trial of Paul Alan Drake, 45, and JoAnn Marie Drake, 44, was pushed back after plea negotiations failed to move as quickly as planned, the Register reported. Both Drakes had been scheduled to plead guilty to unspecified charges Tuesday morning to avoid a scheduled June 10 trial on felony counts of false imprisonment and neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. Crimestoppers Taking Tips on Fatal Shooting Near Strip Club

Polk County Sheriff's deputies responded to a fatal shooting near Big Earl's Gold Mine early Sunday.

  Polk County Sheriff's deputies are still trying to piece together a seemingly under-the-radar gathering of some 300 people near a strip club on the outskirts of Des Moines, which erupted in gunfire and left one man dead early Sunday morning. The Des Moines Register reports more than 300 people gathered at an unplanned event, likely through word-of-mouth, across three properties, including Big Earl's Gold Mine and Quick Trip. The gunfire rang out roughly between 3:20 and 3:30 a.m., the newspaper reports. At least one of those shots struck Reginald Renard Bryan Jr., 23, of Florida.
