There are still a handful of spots left for the organization's annual event.
Need your kids' sandbox filled? Let the Ankeny Jaycees take care of that for you. The group still has a handful of slots left for the annual event, which will take place the morning of Saturday, May 4. Those who sign up will get new sand for their kids' sandbox delivered to their homes by the Ankeny Jaycees, who will even fill it up for you. The cost is $10 for the first wheelbarrow-load of sand, and $5 for each load after. Sign up here.

The Ankeny Unplugged Music Festival Series is set for the first four Saturdays in June (June 2, 9, 16 and 23, 2012) at the Ankeny Band Shell in Wagner Park. Ankeny Unplugged also is partnering with local ticketing company Tikly to offer early-bird season passes to this year’s festival. Passes are $10 and include specials for food, drinks, merchandise and more. Tickets are available at this website. More than 1,600 people attended the 2011 series, and this year’s concertgoers can expect a bigger and better festival, including a brand-new lineup of live original local, regional and national bands. A friendly competition among members of the Ankeny Jaycees has resulted in a $1,990 donation to Special Olympics Iowa and one member rappelling down the Financial Center building in downtown Des Moines. The Jaycees, a community service-focused organization, contributed $1,000 to open the contest for members. In just five days of fundraising, members were able to raise an additional $990. Lindsay Schwarte emerged as top fundraiser and won the opportunity to rappel down the Financial Center with Special Olympics Iowa in downtown Des Moines on Wednesday, Sept. 21. “I had a great time racing to raise money with my fellow Jaycees," Schwarte said. Unfortunately, the swimming event comes first in a traditional triathlon. Hundreds of youth may wish it were last as they prepare to compete in Saturday’s fifth annual Ankeny Youth Triathlon amid the week’s steadily high temperatures. Organizers acknowledged the heat will be an issue but said they are well prepared to handle the situation. “The kids get dehydrated, but we have staff there that do a great job responding,” said Ryan Penning, recreation supervisor with Ankeny’s Parks and Recreation Department. More than 500 local volunteers will lend a hand during the four-day celebration.
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, you shouldn’t have to look too far. Ankeny SummerFest, an annual four-day celebration held each July, starts today and runs through the weekend. Whether it’s a concert, a softball tournament or carnival rides, SummerFest organizers and volunteers are hoping to provide something for everyone. “It’s our goal to create memories by providing family-friendly fun for people of all ages,” said Julie Cooper, executive director of the Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce.
