Matt Strawn, Iowa GOP Chair, Stepping Down After Caucus Woes

The head of the Iowa Republican Party announced he will resign next week after calls for his resignation after the Caucus vote-count problems.

Iowa Republican Party chair Matt Strawn announced his resignation this week after calls earlier this month for him to leave the position. Strawn faced criticism from across the state after problems with the certified results of the ever-so-close Republican Caucus. Eight counties were never certified, meaning the true winner of the Caucus may never be known. Strawn initially refused to officially declare Rick Santorum the winner because of the discrepancy, though he later relented. Santorum sprang ahead of initially declared winner Mitt Romney after the certified results were released. The fact Strawn refused to declare a winner, more than the counting problems, was the final straw for Craig Robinson, a prominent player in the party and …

POLL: If Stephen Colbert Was in the Iowa Caucus, Would You Have Voted for Him?

Comedian Stephen Colbert announced he is maybe, kind of, possibly running for president.

Editor's note: If the video doesn't play directly, you can follow the link to watch it on YouTube. Stephen Colbert, host of the Comedy Central fake news show The Colbert Report, has announced he might be running for president. Sort of. "I am proud to announce that I am forming an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for the President of the United States of South Carolina!" Colbert said Thursday on his show, as balloons cascaded from the ceiling. The announcement came after Public Policy Polling revealed he was ahead of GOP candidate Jon Huntsman in Colbert's home state of South Carolina, which is holding a Republican primary Jan. 21. On Wednesday's show, he mused on the possibility of running, and on …

Gingrich Asks Iowans To Punish Negative Politicians at Waterloo Stop

The Republican presidential candidate decried negative ads that have run against him.

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich attacked negative advertising - and those who use it - at a campaign stop in Waterloo Sunday. "I said from the very beginning we would run a positive campaign," he said. "We would talk about positive ideas, and we would offer positive solutions. Some of my opponents have taken a very different tack, partly because they couldn't defend their record." While not immediately naming any names, Gingrich later mentioned rival Mitt Romney in connection to an ad that says he teamed with Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi on global warming. "It is a blatant falsehood, and Romney's people know it's false," he said. The ad was paid for by the Political Action Committee (PAC) Restore Our Future, which supports …

Newt is a whiner, and he reminds me of the bully who wants you to step outside if you say anything negative to him. He is more responsible than anyone for the dirty politics we have today, and now he has the gall to cry foul when his own tactics are turned against him. And some want him to be president? Give me a break!   more ›

Perry Slams Santorum in Waterloo

The Texas governor, now trailing former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in polls, told the crowd of over 100 that Santorum is a Washington insider.

Rick Perry sought to draw a clear line between himself and fellow social conservative Rick Santorum at a stop in Waterloo Friday, calling his opponent a Washington insider and suggesting Santorum was not a true conservative. "Other campaigns say that they're conservative, but the fact is their records don't always square with the rhetoric," Perry said. "I have great respect for him," Perry said of Santorum. "But yesterday, once again, he defended his prolific pork barrel spending." As a senator, Santorum voted to raise the debt ceiling eight times, Perry said. "Asking a Washington insider to stop runaway spending is like asking a bank robber to stop robbing the vault," the Texas governor said. "Washington insiders cannot solve what is …

Romney Packs Diner to Overflowing in Cedar Falls After Long Absence From Area

The Republican presidential hopeful quoted "America the Beautiful" at J's Homestyle Cooking.

A small space and growing caucus fever made for a cramped meet-and-greet with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney at J's Homestyle Cooking in Cedar Falls Thursday, with about 100 people - many of them media with giant cameras - packed into the diner and just as many shuffled into a white overflow tent set up just outside. The restaurant was filled to capacity by 7:30 a.m., some who'd been relegated to the tent said, well before the candidate arrived after 8 a.m. The energy was high at the event, however. Warm weather kept many in the tent long after Romney's initial appearance there - he stopped in for a few words and handshakes before heading through the media gauntlet into the restaurant, where he made a short speech before …

Can Romney's 11th Hour Rush in Iowa Make up for Lost Time?

The candidate avoided the state for months, but is visiting Cedar Falls and Ames today and was in North Liberty last night.

Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is visiting Cedar Falls and Ames today as part of a last-minute Iowa bus tour that seems to be trying to make up for months of missed face time in the state. Ever since the Ames straw poll in August, which Romney declined to attend, the former governor of Massachusetts has been conspicuous by his lack of presence in the state. Now, with only a few days until the Jan. 3 caucus, he's finally showing up in the place, Ames, that was the unofficial start of Iowa's campaign season. But not having campaigned in Iowa may not actually hurt Romney on caucus night, some political experts say. "He put in a lot of time and effort four years ago," University of Iowa political science professor Tim Hagle said. "He's …

Santorum Rips Paul at Stop in Cedar Falls

The Republican candidate toured Scratch Cupcakery Tuesday evening.

Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum told voters during a stop in Cedar Falls that they should choose him over Ron Paul, who is polling high in Iowa. He defied them to find anything the Texas Congressman has been able to get through Congress. "I think the more Iowans look at Ron Paul the less attractive he will become," he said, criticizing claims Paul would cut one trillion dollars from the federal deficit in the first year. "No president can cut one trillion dollars. The congress has to pass that. You show me any indication Ron Paul's been able to pass anything through Congress in 20 years." Santorum implored voters at Scratch Cupcakery Tuesday to shock the world by choosing a true conservative. "Don't defer your judgement to national …

Santorum is clueless and irrelevant. Strong on anti abortion unless it's for his family! Yes it was a tragedy for them, yet he wants to prevent others from having the option the Santorums had. Strong on the Military, but never found the desire to serve, himself. Typical Fraud. http://www.hanlonsrazor.org/2011/06/16/did-you-know-rick-santorums-wife-had-a-partial-birth-abortion/   more ›

Occupy Members Plan to Vote "Uncommitted" at Iowa Caucuses

Members are encouraged to attend the Jan. 3 caucuses without supporting any candidate, a move that has historical precedent.

Some Occupy Iowa members are planning to caucus this year, but they say they won't support any of the candidates on the ballot. Instead, Occupiers are pushing an effort called "Occupy Iowa Caucuses: Caucus for Uncommitted." The plan is to attend a caucus and play by the rules, but vote "uncommitted" on Jan. 3. The move is directed at both Democrat and Republican caucuses. "This is a way of participating without having to give in to the lesser of two evils," said Brandon Long, 24, a member of Occupy Cedar Valley who helped organize the idea. He said the point is to send a messasge that they want to participate in the process, but feel it has been hijacked by the "1 percent." The idea has some historic precedent. In both 1972 and 1976 in …

Cedar Falls Organizer Miffed at Campaigns Trying to 'Hijack' Tea Party

At least two candidates have hired local tea party leaders to reach out to their fellow conservative activists.

With just two weeks until the Iowa caucuses, GOP presidential campaigns have stepped up efforts to snatch the still-divided Tea Party vote, hiring key Tea Party activists to lure support from local chapters. The move has at least one local Tea Party organizer miffed, but others say the hirings are a smart move. "I know that if you’re trying to win a campaign, you have to do everything you can do to win," said Cedar Valley Tea Party organizer Judd Saul, who recently endorsed Rick Santorum. "But it feels like another attempted hijacking of the Tea Party." Saul has watched as Tea Party leaders in early voting states have been scooped up by candidates, especially Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann. Charlie Gruschow, also referred to as "Tea …

I think the sellout occurs when tea partiers back a candidate antithetical to tea party values, one who supported the TARP bank bailouts and Obama's stimulus, who calls for more government to fight supposed man-made global warming, and who believes in world government and diminished American sovereignty. Who you ask? Why Newt Romney of course.   more ›

Ron Paul Wins Cedar Falls Tea Party Straw Poll

The Cedar Valley tea party met Tuesday night to cast their ballots.

Ron Paul emerged as the clear winner in the Cedar Valley Tea Party Presidential Straw Poll on Tuesday evening. The event drew 60 participants, and of that Paul took 37 votes. Rick Santorum trailed behind with nine votes and Newt Gingrich with five. Michele Bachmann and Jon Huntsman got three votes each. Mitt Romney got two and Rick Perry had just one. "I think I was an unknowing member of the tea party before it was a movement," said Greg Radke, of Waterloo, who spoke for Paul's campaign. "Ron Paul epitomizes the three principles of the tea party: constitutional principles, fiscal responsibility and free markets." Are you a tea party member? Who will you be voting for? Tell us in the comments section below. Judd Saul, a local tea party …
