Scott Walker in Iowa: Quid Pro Quo Among Political Pals or Trial Balloon?

“Truth Squad” plans to rally ahead of Wisconsin governor’s appearance before Polk County Republican activists in West Des Moines Thursday.

Advocacy groups for progressives in Iowa and Wisconsin are holding “Scott Walker Truth Squad” in advance of the Wisconsin governor’s appearance Thursday at a Polk County Republican Fundraiser, one of several of appearances before GOP activists that point to a possible presidential run in 2016. Advisers to Walker say he’s returning a favor to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who hosted a fundraiser in Dubuque, Iowa, for the embattled Wisconsin governor during his 2012 recall election, the Washington Post reported. Even if Walker’s advisers are telling it like it is, and that Walker’s appearance with Branstad is just a little quid pro quo among political friends, the pre-banquet rally by Progress Iowa and One Wisconsin Now is expected to add to the…

Iowa's Branstad Praises Paul, But Slams Door on Endorsement

With less than two weeks to go, popular Republican governor's endorsement could buoy one of the frontrunners.

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad had words of praise for the strength of Ron Paul’s organization in Iowa, but slammed the door on an endorsement that could lift one of the six Republican presidential hopefuls hunting for votes in the state’s lead-off Jan. 3 caucuses. A nod from Branstad — a hugely popular Republican governor who served four terms and then came out of political retirement in 2010 to win an unprecedented fifth term — could thin the crowded field at the finish line. Paul, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are jockeying for first place, and any one of them could win the caucuses, Branstad said with two weeks of campaigning left.  “It’s a very wide-open race,” Branstad said. “It’s been …

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad will meet with Ankeny residents Wednesday to discuss the state's new blueprint for education reform. The governor will hold a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Ankeny High School auditorium, where he will talk about the state's new plan for education. The plan -- entitled "One Unshakable Vision: World Class Schools for Iowa" -- was unveiled by Branstad last week. The 10-year-plan to transform Iowa's education system includes a four-tier teacher compensation system, steps to ensure third-grade literacy, new high school end-of-course exams that would be required for graduation, and state-funded college entrance exams for all 11th-graders, writes Lynn Campbell of IowaPolitics.com. "This blueprint shows specific …
