Wine Lovers Sample the Best of Iowa Wines

More than 20 Iowa wineries attend the annual Ankeny SummerFest event.

SummerFest attendees enjoyed a sampling of Iowa wines Sunday at the annual Wine Festival. This year’s event had more than 20 wineries present, including several wineries that had not been a part of Wine Fest before. Mike Furlong, of Ardon Creek Vineyard and Winery, showed his wine for the first time at SummerFest. “It’s amazing the resources Ankeny put into this whole adventure,” Furlong said. He said Iowa winemakers are becoming more skilled and more winter-hardy grapevines are becoming more available. “Quite often in Iowa wineries you will find a good sweet wine,” Furlong said. “The challenge is to make a good dry wine.” Linda Alleman of West Des Moines sampled wines Sunday. 1) Today marks the final day of the 2011 Ankeny SummerFest but the events are far from over. At 3 p.m. near the festival grounds, witness a bit of friendly competition at the Pros vs. Joes Water Fight.
