ReplyJoe and Kurt, this is Deb Dyar with the City of Ankeny. I wanted to clarify that in the agreement the City Council approved Monday night and the School Board will consider next Monday, the School District agrees to convey 70 acres of land located along 36th Street west of State Street to the City in exchange for approximately $2.2 million of road and utility improvements. The School currently owns the land, not the City. You can read the press release here: http://tinyurl.com/9vutyf2. I hope this helps.

ReplyThis is Deb Dyar with the city of Ankeny. We're glad you are enjoying the summer concerts and Friday night movies. With school starting August 15th, with it comes football, swimming, cross country, golf and more. We have found that offering movies and concerts in June and July allows the City to leverage available resources and generates a larger audience for these events.
We'll keep your suggestion in mind for next year

ReplyMr. Zupan, Deb Dyar with the City of Ankeny here. Megan is correct in her comment regarding Capt. Schaffer. Assistant City Manager Jim Spradling confirmed that according to the Municipal Code Chapter 132, the police department was required to deny a solicitor’s permit to Mr. Hussey due to a prior felony conviction. This denial triggered the appeal to the city council, who became the arbiter to reverse, modify or affirm the denial. The police department had no latitude in this matter; the latitude rested with the elected officials. According to City Code, only the city council has the authority to reverse the denial of a solicitor license, which they did last evening. I hope this clarifies the matter.

Mr. Reiland,
The City of Ankeny is pleased to see citizens like yourself engaged in the democratic process of replacing Councilman Block's open seat. I wanted to take this opportunity to make clear that the authority to do so has always been in the hands of Ankeny citizens. The action the city council took last Monday was not to subvert the wishes of Ankeny citizens, but to allow the city council to govern effectively until such time a citizen petition was submitted into the record or until the next regular election. During the meeting, city council members encouraged citizens to submit a petition for a special election. The audio from that meeting is available on the city website for anyone who would like to listen to it. http://tinyurl.com/83exkz7

Mollie, Monday's press release was an announcement of the city council's decision to appoint a replacement for Council Member Block and it included the two options available to elected officials (1) appointment and (2) special election.
We have updated Monday’s press release (http://tinyurl.com/ceakwex) to include the link to the April 25th press release that outlines the procedures in detail.
We appreciate you asking these questions and hope this addresses them and helps to inform others of the options available to them. If you or others have questions, we encourage you to contact the city clerk's office at 965-6400.

My name is Deb Dyar, the City's public relations officer. We received word earlier today that Mr. Scott has withdrawn his name from consideration for the mayoral appointment citing the commitment of time required to serve effectively. On behalf of the City of Ankeny, we want to thank Mr. Scott for his interest in serving the citizens of Ankeny.
