DNR: Saylorville Lake, A Top Spot For Boating While Drunk

Saylorville Lake has been a problem area when it comes to boating and drinking, DNR says.

Nearby Saylorville Lake has ranked as one of Iowa's top five areas for boating while intoxicated violations since 2008, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

In 2012, the lake came in at No. 2 with a total of 16 boating while intoxicated arrests.

More than 70 percent of Iowa's boating fatalities in that same year involved alcohol.

“Many of those victims were innocent bystanders,” said Susan Stocker, boating law administrator and education coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in a release.

That's one of the reasons why law enforcement will be on the look out for intoxicated boaters from June 28 to June 30 as part of a national Operation Dry Water campaign.
