Early reports indicate the 51-year-old man allegedly pointed the gun at his daughter and pulled the trigger without realizing it was loaded.

An Ankeny man faces felony charges in an accidental shooting that left his 18-year-old daughter dead.

Scott M. Hazelbaker, 51, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault causing serious injury, which are both Class D felonies punishable by up to five years in prison.

Police were called to his Delaware Avenue apartment about 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, after receiving a report that someone had been shot.

Officers found 18-year-old Emily Hazelbaker with a fatal gunshot wound.

Early reports indicate that Scott Hazelbaker allegedly pointed the gun at his daughter and pulled the trigger without realizing it was loaded, according to a release from the Ankeny Police Department.

Police were unable to disclose the type of handgun used, but said that Hazelbaker had a non professional permit to carry a handgun.

The case remains under investigation.

Paige Brown, a friend of Emily Hazelbaker, said that Emily and her father were very close and that Emily's mother died when she was young, according to a report on KCCI.

Emily Hazelbaker was enrolled in DMACC's dental hygiene program. A 9 p.m. vigil was planned for Hazelbaker at Haines Park in Altoona.
