Father Speaks About Daughter He Fatally Shot in Accident

Scott Hazelbaker, 51, of Ankeny, talks about the accidental shooting of his daughter Emily Hazelbaker.

The father accused of shooting his own daughter when he unknowingly pointed a gun at her and pulled the trigger spoke to KCCI recently.

Scott Hazelbaker, 51, told KCCI that he knows Emily Hazelbaker, his 18-year-old daughter, has forgiven him for the accident.

“She was just an angel here on earth,” Hazelbaker said.

Ankeny police were called to the home for a shooting about 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 14. Hazelbaker said he couldn't go into details, but said that his daughter was getting ready to go to a concert in Kansas City on Saturday and that they were just joking around and having fun.

Hazelbaker was charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault causing serious injury, which are both Class D felonies punishable by up to five years in prison.
