Zander Reed, an Ankeny 10-year-old enrolled in the Ames Home School Assistance program, competed in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland Wednesday.

Reed was able to spell Maraschino and Belgravia without fail, however he was among 200 contestants who did not make it to Thursday's semi-final round due to his performance on a written exam, the Ames Tribune reports.

Reed is sponsored by Iowa State University's Greenlee School of Journalism & Communication. Reed told the Tribune that plans on returning to he bee again in 2014.
