Ankeny Event Planner: Kindergarten Registration, Souper Bowl of Caring, Music, Speech and More

You could find all these events in our events calendar, but we at Ankeny Patch thought we would make it easy for you by putting the highlights of this week all in one, convenient place.

Here's what is going on in Ankeny the week of Jan. 23-28:

  • The will be holding an on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. Participants can learn how to insert pictures, text boxes and columns to create brochures and posters. To see if there's still time to register, call 515-964-6460.
  • The Ankeny City Council will meet in a special planning session tonight at 5 p.m. The council will meet in the council chambers. Check here to see an agenda.
  • The concert band will hold a special concert tonight at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the high school and there is no cost for the public to attend.
  • Are you a master procrastinator? Does there never seem to be enough hours in the day to accomplish the things on your to-do list? If so, the Academic Achievement Center at in Ankeny is hosting which intends to assist students, faculty and staff with time management skills. The workshop will be held at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday and is free.
  • will hold an on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Participants will learn some of the tricks and tools of this powerful search engine, including advanced search features, translation tools, dictionaries, and Google tools. This class is an excellent follow-up to the Search Engine Strategies class. Registration is required. Call the library at 515-965-6460, ext 5.
  • For families of students preparing to make the transition from middle to high school next year, a will be held Wednesday at Southview Middle School cafeteria, 1050 S.W. Cherry St. across from . Meetings will be held at two different times - 5:30 p.m. for students whose last names begin with the letters A-K, and 7 p.m. for the letters L-Z.
  • The will kick off its on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. ACA children will bring in their loose change to their homeroom teacher during the month of February, and the elementary class that brings in the most will get a pizza party. All funds raised will go toward the school's scholarship program.
  • On Wednesday, the Student Activities group is sponsoring a guest speaker at 11:15 a.m. will deliver the lecture entitled "Succeed Faster." Free lunch will provided for those in attendance. The lecture will be held in the quiet lounge of building 5.
  • The is hosting a class at 5 p.m. Wednesday. These classes are designed to help minimize the negative impact of divorce on children and educate parents about the needs of children during the process. Call Jim Thorpe at 515-289-9136 to register.
  • Need help on your income taxes this year? is offering by appointment starting Thursday and running through April 13. Individuals can call 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment. DMACC accounting students who have been certified by the Internal Revenue Service will help prepare federal and Iowa individual income tax returns for qualified residents
  • On Thursday, take the little ones to Tot Time at the library. Tot Time is a time set aside for kids and moms/caregivers to gather, play and get to know one another.  Tot Time is held in the library meeting room and begins at 10:15 a.m.
  • The Ankeny Young Professionals will hold their at 11 a.m. Thursday at the in Ankeny. Anyone is welcome to attend to see what this group is all about.
  • The ., Thursday at Leonetti's Bella Cucina, located at 1238 Eighth St. in West Des Moines. The luncheon fee is $20 if reservations are made by 4 p.m. on the Monday prior to the meeting. The cost of the luncheon with a late reservation or without a reservation is $25. Please call Charla Davidson at 515-419-3582 to make your reservation.
  • The Optimist Club of Ankeny will hold at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at . Anyone is welcome to join including potential new members.
  • Kindergarten registration for 2012-2013 school year will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2012.  If your child will be five years of age on or before September 15, 2012, please attend registration at your neighborhood school. for more information.
  • Looking for something to do Friday night? The Ankeny boys and girls basketball teams will take on Urbandale at home Friday night. The at 6:15 p.m. and the at 7:45 p.m.
  • Are you an exisiting member of in Ankeny? If so, set your alarms bright and early for either Saturday morning and head the the at 8 a.m. to welcome new congregation members to the HTLC family.
  • Saturday is a big day for school events in Ankeny. Family and friends of students can check out the at or at . Both events will be happening throughout the day.
  • will be holding its this weekend. To participate, bring a can of soup or other non-perishable food item (or a cash donation) with you to worship at any AFUMC service on Saturday or Sunday. All donations will benefit the DMARC Food Pantry.
