So Who is Really Buying Influence with Government?
It may not be who you think it is.
Our government is being sold to the highest bidder, I think that's something that virtually every American, regardless of political persuasion can agree with. Both sides like to claim the other side is the one who is really buying the influence, but both sides rarely actually provide data to back up their claims.
That's where an organization called OpenSecrets.org comes in. Among other things, they track donations and contributions to campaigns as well as lobbying. Well, they have a report of top donors since 1989, which is over 23 years. Guess what it shows? Of the top donors you have to go to #19 before you find a donor that even leans Republican. Of the top 20, 14 of those lean Democrat, and of those 13 are strongly or solid Democrat.
So what does it mean? It means that while the left has been complaining about the influence of money in politics, they've been leading the pack about actually doing it. That means when they complain about things like the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, they are being hypocrites.
